Māori Academy is a whole whānau with 3 rōpu (groups) within it.....morning, middle and afternoon. This year each group has their own Seesaw Blog so shared lesson content and messages are tailored specifically to them. If you're looking as a child, or a parent on behalf of your child, make sure you're scrolling through the right blog :)

Summerland Māori Academy 2019
2018 saw the creation of a māori academy at Summerland, a place where students participate in consistent and focussed lessons on te reo me tikanga māori. We cover learning objectives in Level 1 and 2 of the 'Te reo Māori in English Medium Schools' Curriculum, as well as learning waiata and looking into history, customs and traditions....all things encompassed in Te Ao Māori.
In 2019 we have 3 hapori (groups) named Ata, Awatea and Ahiahi with tamariki from Years 4-6.
The Māori Academy gives māori and non-māori tauira a chance to gain an understanding and appreciation of the indigenous people and ways of Aotearoa.
It's exciting to learn a new language, whether it's a part of your own family history or not. The journey we are on together is one where we are learning so much more than words, we are learning whakatauki (words of wisdom), whakawhanaungatanga (connection to others), kiritau (self esteem), tuakiri (identity) manaakitanga (kindness and respect), and so much more.
My hope is that the seed being planted through these classes will continue to be nurtured for years to come as our tamariki continue on through the school system and beyond.
Ko te reo te taikura o te whakaao marāma (the language is the key to understanding)
