This is the third year Summerland has run a unique visual art programme for our primary age students. We have a full time art teacher (Janet Shepherd) who gives learning opportunities to whole class groups and specially selected students groups.
The whole class groups have the opportunity to work for 2 days in each term and usually work on a project over those 2 days.(Researching, learning skills, planning evaluating and making their artwork).
The special art groups are withdrawn from their regular class for half a day each week, for a 6 week course. The students are identified as having a special ability in visual art, showing keen interest in drawing or be academically challenged (these students are given an alternative way to learn).
There are three levels: junior (years 1 & 2), middle (years 3 & 4) and seniors (years 5 & 6).
School Trash to Fashion is run at the beginning of the year as a special design and construction course. Year 5 and 6 students opt into this through their interest in design with the goal of entering the Auckland School's Trash to Fashion competition in term 2.
