Junior Art class Year 1 - 2
Middle Art Class Year 3 - 4
Senior Art Class Year 5 - 6
Setting the scene:
The children in the junior and middle art classes are mixed
groups who were identified by teachers as having an aptitude towards
art or being academically challenged.
One benefit for these groups was to create an opportunity
for all children to experience success in a way not necessarily offered in the
classroom.
The junior children work in the art room one whole morning
per week for Term 2.
The middle and senior children participate in one whole day
per week each group.
In addition to the special art classes, twice per week I release teachers for a whole day and work with their classes in the art room making art. These classes range in age levels and they enjoy experimenting with techniques and media not taught by their classroom teacher.
All special art classes are combining science and art to explore clay and pottery.
They are learning the techniques of making clay into pottery and the need to fire the clay to make their objects more permanent.
We will also be finding local clay and experimenting to see if it is usable to make pottery.
The plan is to construct a paper kiln at school at the end of the term.
Combined with the clay theme, each group will learn techniques of sketching which will lead into using images in different printing techniques.
The skills these children will experience include: thinking,
problem solving, decision making, risk taking, planning, research, working and
sharing with others, communication skill both orally and through images, time
management, plus knowledge of a range of art techniques and developing
creativity. This sounds a lot of
learning, however, the skills are easily witnessed when seeing the children at
work.
It is a real privilege to watch and listen to the
conversations as these children work, witnessing the excitement, enthusiasm and
‘give it a go’ attitude.
