Auckland Low Riders Visit
As part of our topic we had the Auckland Low Riders Wheelchair Basketball team come and visit us.
They showed us their skills - how to turn, how to do a 360, how to brake and some of the drills they practise. They are off to Invercargill soon for the National Champs.
They also came with ten wheelchairs which we had a turn in.
We found it was really hard trying to make the wheelchair go where you wanted it too - and even harder to bounce the ball while moving the wheelchair.
They were really amazing being able to do both.
Thanks heaps to Marty, James, Warren, Jojo, Lisa and Glenn.
These are some of the things we learnt...
I learnt how to spin the wheelchair around. I have to put my hand on the side and spin around. Sasha
I learnt how to do a 360. Joaquin
Kyle taught me how to spin in the wheelchair. Logan
Warren drinks medicine and water he uses a tube which goes to a peg in his tummy. He does this when he is hungry. He got sick when he was little and now he can’t speak or chew. Tayne
I learnt how to brake in a wheelchair. You pull the wheels back really tight. I learnt that they could turn around in the wheelchair. I learnt that they could do lots of things even though they are still in a wheelchair. Chelsea
You can play basketball in a wheelchair. You can play rugby in a wheelchair and you can play tennis. The bad parts are how they ended up in wheelchairs. James had a party and he crashed his bike. Marty fell off scaffolding when he was building. Lereagan
I found out that Warren can’t eat, he gets his food in a tube which goes into his tummy. I did sign language with him because can’t talk. He used his hands to talk. Dannielle
Marty taught me how to do a 360. I learned how to do a wheelie. Kyle
I learnt how to do a wheelie and a twist in the wheelchair. I found out that people have tubes in their tummies so they can eat. Ben
I learnt that Warren couldn’t eat solid food so he ate with his tummy and he could only eat things that were runny. Annelise
I learnt how to ride a wheelchair. It was tricky and it was hard to turn. Priyanka
I learnt that when you are pushing a wheelchair you push the left side to turn right and the right side to turn left. Tarun
